In addition, after several proof-of-concept tweaks in our design phase, “My Eyes, Your Gaze,” will now be produced exclusively as a hard cover title. NEWS: Bridge Mourns Untimely Passing of Poetry Section Editor Spencer Paul Hutchinson

It is with profound grief and sadness that the Bridge editors today share news of the tragic and untimely passing of Bridge Poetry Section Edtor Spencer Paul Hutchinson. According to his obituary posted by surviving family on Legacy.com, Hutchinson, 39, was found to have "passed away unexpectedly April 21, 2024 in his apartment in East Garfield Park, Chicago."

Bridge Editor-in-Chief Michael Workman was recently interviewed for the new Contemporary Literary Publishing Lab at the University of Chicago, a new resource of the creative writing department offering “news of upcoming CLP events, interviews with people in the publishing industry, our research on publishing trends, and a database of literary journals.”

Bridge welcomes new Poetry section Editor Spencer Hutchinson (@spencer.hutchinson.714). Spencer Hutchinson is a 2009 BFA Graduate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a 2020 MFA graduate from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he majored in New Media Art Studies and studied Art and Art History as a Continuing Studies Student through The Graham School at The University of Chicago. Hutchinson specializes in painting, drawing, poetry and sound based/new media works as well as critical writing on art.

Bridge today announces a programming partnership program with the Evanston Experimental Film Festival, offering an additional screening opportunity for select shorts through the Bridge Video streaming service. 

Johannes DeYoung’s “Headshots,” Soyeon Jung’s “White Noise” and Walter Smits’ “in which they were not yet hermit crabs” will be presented as part of a Bridge Video lineup within their larger program, with the showcase screened outdoors on the wall of the Evanston Art Center on September 22, 2023, and on a video screen inside the Evanston Art Center from September 22 -October 20, 2023.

Bridge Video today announces the initial lineup for its inaugural Bridge Film & Video Festival. In addition, the lineup expands to include a second date for the festival, now Friday, Oct. 27 & the originally announced Saturday, Oct. 28 screening dates.

Most films will also be available for viewing anytime through subscription to Bridge Video for $25/every six months. With a few exceptions, film and video works selected for the inaugural Bridge Film and Video Festival will not be premiered on Bridge Video until after the festival closes. MAKING WAY: SAILING INTO THE REVOLUTIONARY STORM

Written by Dick Farkas with drawings by M.A. Papanek-Miller and designed by Jessica Larva, Making Way: Sailing Into The Revolutionary Storm is an adventure story that takes place on the waterways of colonial America, on a schooner (sailing ship) named Commerce. The story embraces a group of unlikely teenagers who find each other, an experienced sailor and a dog who collectively embark on a life changing journey during the political upheaval that surrounded the start of a new country. The teens face uncertainty living in a society not yet crystallized and not yet framed by a clear value system, which creates questions and presents dilemmas as their lives unfold. The main characters are challenged to reflect on and measure their own simple logic and their moral instinct against the mores and discrimination of the society around them. With every chapter, the drawings are in conversation with the written story, and they provide a visual context for the revolutionary era time period. The story, drawings, and book design evolved as a creative collaborative project which gave rise to this book as an object to hold, read, see, and experience.

TREATMENTS: CLOSING RECEPTION & READINGS

On Tuesday, May 16th from 6-8pm Material, Chicago will host a closing reception for Treatments 2019 / 2023 and readings by Rachel J. Webster and Josh Honn of poetry included in the book of the same name. Published to accompany the exhibition, Webster's The Well: Grief Poems and Honn’s A Slow Archive, each included in the Bridge Books release of Treatments, offer poetic responses to the early loss of their spouses to illness. Both readings will be video recorded live and entered into the Readings Archive after the event.

The first Chicago exhibition for Bridge artistic collective member Ryan Tynan, this survey of the artist’s early work will delve into his work in video art, set design and model-making, and breakthrough work in cinepoetics.
