Grooms on Hold

Description
Grooms on Hold places viewers in the intimate, anxious final minutes of bachelorhood. A collage of audio and video repurposed from countless real wedding ceremonies, the film is a voyeuristic exploration of the tension between public joy and private vulnerability – a juxtaposition that reveals overlooked truths, and humor, beneath one of life's biggest moments.

Director Biography - Samuel Karow is a Midwest-based video artist and filmmaker. He received his BFA in Film from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Working primarily in documentary and experimental forms, his work focuses on moments of beauty, intimacy, and the textures of lived experience. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

For over a decade I have worked as a wedding videographer, making highlight videos that capture the day’s outward joy and celebration; quick-cut montages set to uplifting music that hit all the predictable notes. Though this approach dependably resonates with clients, to me it has always been a repetitive and predictable formula.

Could I somehow repurpose the years of accumulated wedding footage into something deeper? This question led me to become an archeologist of my own hard drives, sifting through hours of raw audio and video. Reevaluating mundane and discarded moments, I discovered a more profound narrative.

Via small lapel microphones worn by the grooms, we hear worries, confessions, and desires unfold. Immersed inside this headspace, we feel the anxious anticipation, their sense of being “on hold,” and emotional conflicts as they navigate the imminent display of life-long commitment.

I paired this audio rawness with the visual stillness of wide, static shots of ceremony sites: churches, parks, botanical gardens and country clubs. The camera’s lens, fixed on a tripod, lingers on guests as they mingle, find their seats, and wait. Contrast between the venues’ external bustle and the grooms’ internal monologue creates a unique voyeuristic experience.

With Grooms on Hold, I offer a new and meditative perspective on society’s relationship with Celebration, exposing the more complex and vulnerable layers that lie under the surface.
